It all starts with a home security inspection

Security starts with an examination of all entry points such as doors and windows. Locks, lights, and landscaping all need to be examined.

From the outside:

  • Are doorframes able to resist forced entry? (Including rear door and garage service door)

  • Are there windows within 40" of a door where someone can break the glass and open the door?

  • Is the security door adequate to resist a pry bar?

  • Can sliding doors or windows simply be lifted from their track?

  • Most window 'locks' can be disabled in seconds.

  • Are doors properly illuminated? (Consider motion lights)

From the inside:

  • Can you see who is at the door before you unlock it?  ( A peep hole is good, a video camera is better, thieves never know who is watching - even if you are not home)

  • Do you have an alarm to warn you of an intruder at night?

  • In case of an intruder, do you have a secure room to flee to while you call the police? (Consider a  'safe room')
