Home Security Safety Tips
Exterior Doors
-
Lock all doors every time
you leave home, even if it just to 'run to the store'.
-
Exterior doors are
solid-core or metal-clad.
-
All entry doors have
peepholes or video viewer so you can see who is outside
before you open the door.
-
Glass panels within 40”
of door need to be reinforced or shatterproof.
-
Entry doors need a
security deadbolt.
-
Doors and doorjamb should
be reinforced with steel plates and security screws to
prevent anyone from simply kicking the door in.
-
Keep a spare key with a
trusted neighbor, not anywhere near the door.
-
Even better – install a
keyless electronic entry deadbolt.
Garage
-
Do not leave door partly
open to vent heat. Install a ventilation system.
-
Confirm the door opener
is the type that prevents thieves driving by from randomly
opening your door.
-
Install a physical lock
when gone for extended periods of time or unplug door
opener.
-
Service door and door
leading into the home need to be treated as main entry doors
and reinforced.
Patio Doors
-
Sliding doors are
especially vulnerable. Install Slider 'deadbolts', pins,
'lift out preventives' and other methods to protect door.
-
Use a 'Charley Bar' to
prevent opening.
-
Double doors need top and
bottom lock-bolts.
Windows
Outdoors
-
House number is clearly
displayed, on mailbox, curb, and house. Consider painting it
on the roof as well.
-
Shrubs and trees are
trimmed so there is no place to hide.
-
Plant cactus or thorny
plants under all windows.
-
Install motion lights to
illuminate all entries.
-
Lock all gates with high
security padlocks.
-
Keep all ladders and
items that can be used to break in locked up.
This list is by no means
complete. Security systems, video monitors, and many other
items may be prudent as well.
